You have just spent another night tossing and turning, waking up to aches and pains, more tired than when you went to bed. Let’s face it; the time has come to purchase a new mattress.
The very idea of mattress shopping sends you into a panic. There are so many advertisements stating that certain mattresses are the best. That is where this article could come in handy for you.
The most important thing to do is to test out a mattress before you buy it. That does not mean that you can lie down on a mattress with your legs dangling off the side for thirty seconds to test a mattress. You must lie down in the position that you would normally sleep in, and stay that way for about ten minutes. It takes at least ten minutes for the muscles in your body to relax enough to really feel how supportive and comfortable a mattress is.
The next thing to do is try out all of the mattress styles.
• Viscoelastic foam mattresses- The technology was developed by NASA for this type of mattress. At first it may feel very hard, but as the “memory cells” warm up the mattress molds to your shape. Strobel Technologies and Tempur-Pedic both make these mattresses and the mattress prices start out at around $1000 for a twin size. A base or box spring specifically designed for these mattresses start out at around $150 for a twin size.
• Latex mattresses- Very popular up until WWII, they are now starting to make a comeback. A good choice for allergy suffers because the material cannot harbor dust or mites. NOT a good choice for those with latex allergies! Nature’s Rest makes a twin sized mattress starting around $900.
• Air mattresses- These are becoming more popular due to the ability to adjust the firmness or softness of the mattress. For mattress sizes larger than a twin, there are usually two chambers controlled by separate valves for couples who have different preferences. These mattresses come with different coverings that can be foam, cotton, or latex. Select Comfort makes a twin size that starts at $450 and Comfort Air makes a twin size that starts at about $600.
• Coil mattresses- Still the most commonly bought type of mattress; there is no single manufacture that can claim to be the best for everyone. The following name brand mattress companies all make affordable mattresses and more luxurious mattresses. Sealy, Serta, Simmons, Spring Air, and Stearns and Foster. The average twin sized mattress starts at around $500.
Make sure to ask about return policies, guarantees, warranties, any hidden fees (delivery, pick-up, or disposal), and make sure that the mattress that you are interested in is brand new, not refurbished.
Lastly, it is always wise to purchase both a mattress and a box spring as a matched set. Many warranties will be invalid if you place your brand new mattress on an old box spring.
